Santander has announced a closure date for its Redcar branch.
The closure, set for Wednesday 18th March, is part of a larger trend of banks reducing their physical presence in favour of online services.

Santander has said that the reason why they are closing this branch is due to a recent review they did, showing that 70% of their branch customers use their Online, Mobile, or Telephone Banking services.
This move has raised concerns about the impact it will have on vulnerable members of the community.
The Redcar branch has been a key resource for many, particularly for older individuals and those without reliable internet access.
For these customers, in-person banking is not just a convenience but a necessity.
The closure will require them to travel to nearby branches, adding time and expense to their banking needs.
The closest Santander branch is now Middlesbrough and Stockton.
It not only affects the bank’s customers but also their employees who are now out of a job.
An employee of the Santander branch who wishes to remain anonymous said: “I was devastated when we were told the news.
“I have worked here for nearly a decade and now have been made redundant.
“I understand the bank’s decision from a business perspective, but it doesn't make it any easier to accept it.
“I just worry for the older people who now have to go online for their banking services.”
There are talks that Santander will provide banking services in the new Redcar library, which is currently being built, but nothing has been confirmed.
If this does happen, it will help bridge the gap for those who struggle to travel or use online banking.
Despite this, many residents remain concerned about the long-term effects of the closure.
The loss of a physical bank branch will make the older generations struggle to complete banking tasks on their own.
Peter Johnson, 71, retired, said: “I have never been good with technology, so online banking is a real struggle for me.
“The staff at Santander have always been so patient and helpful. I don’t know what I’m going do without them.”
Additionally, this closure raises questions about the future of banking in smaller communities, and whether other banks will follow suit, further isolating those who depend on in-person services.
This bank closing makes the Halifax branch the only full-time branch in Redcar, with Nationwide only being open on certain days.
The situation in Redcar reflects a broader national issue, as banks continue to adapt to the digital age while leaving some customers behind.
It highlights the need for a balanced approach that takes into account the needs of all members of the community, ensuring that no one is left without access to essential financial services.
