Redcar's groynes are essential timber and concrete structures on the beach, primarily installed in the 1960s to prevent coastal erosion by trapping sediment (longshore drift) and protecting the coastline.

Cleveland police and rescuers attempted to keep the 20-tonne mammal wet, but experts deemed the North Sea unsuitable for the lost creature. The carcass was later removed by contractors, with its jawbone preserved.
