Majuba car park in Redcar will close overnight for a six month trial period to stop illegal car racing and anti-social behaviour.
Gates have been installed and it will be shut from 10pm to 6am from 7th April until late September.

The decision comes after escalating concerns over illegal car racing, wheelspins, loud revving and persistent anti-social behaviour that has plagued the area for many years.
These activities have not only disrupted the peace but also raised significant safety concerns, prompting the council to take action.

Cllr Neil Bendelow, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The people living by this car park should simply not have to put up with this nuisance which can go on right through the summer.
“Those people intent on this kind of anti-social behaviour should consider themselves warned that neither ourselves nor the police will allow this continue and we will do what it takes to stop it.”
A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) has been in place since 2021 which is designed to stop anti-social behaviour in public spaces.
Both the police and council officers were given more powers, including issuing on-the-spot fines, but neither had the resources to patrol the car park every night.

Traffic calming measures were previously introduced to help reduce the high-speed racing, noise and disturbance but have continued due to limited resources, which is why this night time closure is being introduced as a next step.
Alex Davidson, 32, handyman, said: “I’m a regular user of the car park and have seen and heard the car racing on many occasions.
“They continue to pose a risk not only to themselves but to us drivers and pedestrians too.
“I’m so relieved something is finally being done to try and stop them.”

Fencing has also been repaired to support the closure, and new signage is now in place to notify motorists of the changes.
Throughout the trial period, the council will monitor and assess before making any further decisions.
