Nestled along the North Yorkshire coast, Redcar is more than just its famous beach.

While the iconic views and lively arcades draw crowds, a quieter, more intimate of Redcar awaits those who venture a little further.

We uncover five of Redcar’s best-kept secrets, inviting locals and tourists alike to delve deeper into the charm and character of this town and offer a fresh perspective on what Redcar really has to offer.

  1. Locke Park

Located on Corporation Road, Locke Park was first created from a £5,000 legacy left by Colonel Thomas Locke, a local doctor and magistrate, who wanted to provide public green space for Redcar residents.

The park features a boating lake with pedalos, gardens, tennis courts, and a children’s play area, offering perfect paths for walking, wildlife spotting (including swans, ducks, geese, and herons), and a lakeside cafe making it a very popular family-friendly green space.

What sets Locke Park apart is its ability to offer something for everyone.

Whether you’re seeking a quiet stroll, a fun-filled family day out, or a connection with nature, this hidden gem provides a refreshing contrast to the traditional seaside attractions, making it a must-visit destination in Redcar.

  1. Coatham Marsh

Just a short walk over the road from Locke Park, Coatham Marsh is a hidden gem on Redcar’s edge. Once a medieval “Camp of Refuge” for northern rebels against William the Conqueror in 1070, it is now a modern nature reserve protected by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.

It features diverse habitats like reedbeds, lakes/ponds, grasslands, and wildflower meadows, supporting over 200 bird species and mammals. This wetland is a haven for wildlife, attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts making it an ideal spot for photographers.

The Marsh stands out as a testament to Redcar’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. It offers a refreshing contrast to the traditional seaside experience, inviting visitors to explore a different side of Redcar and to appreciate the beauty of its natural landscapes. It is often overlooked so whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or simply wanting a peaceful walk, Coatham Marsh is an essential destination.

  1. Regent Cinema

Situated on Newcomen Terrace, the Regent Cinema first opened in 1928 as the Pavilion music hall, later becoming a cinema, known for hosting the premiere of Atonement (which was filmed on Redcar beach right next to the cinema). After facing closure due to structural issues, the original building was demolished in 2020 to make way for a new, modern cinema designed as a nod to its Art Deco past, ensuring its legacy continues.

The cinema features state-of-the-art tech design, a bar/restaurant with sea views, 3 screening rooms offering blockbuster films and Event cinema (like opera and ballet). It is a perfect way to spend a couple of hours, spend time with people, and enjoy a sea view meal afterwards. It is highly recommended.

  1. Redcar Leisure Centre

Built just across from the High Street on Ridley Street, Redcar Leisure Centre has a wide range of activities for everyone. It was part of the £31m Redcar & Cleveland Leisure and Community Heart project, which first opened in April 2014. It is a modern, multi-functional hub designed to revitalise the town centre.

The centre includes a 100-station gym (which was recently modernised), 3 swimming pools – a 25m pool, a teaching pool, and a kid's pool - a sauna, a Flowrider, and group fitness classes so everyone has something to enjoy. The centre also offers specialised programs for children and seniors, promoting active lifestyles across all generations.

Whether you’re an experienced athlete or just starting your fitness journey, the Leisure Centre provides the resources and support you need to succeed. It is perfect for those seeking an active and healthy lifestyle in Redcar.

Overlooking the vast Redcar coastline on Lilac Grove, the cafe is situated on the grass “stray” area between Redcar and Marske on Coast Road, just a few strides from the beach, offering fantastic views of the coastline. It is a long-established, family-run cafe well known for its extensive menu, sea views, and dog-friendly outdoor seating area. It is a popular spot for locals, tourists, and dog walkers. The Stray Cafe offers a memorable and enjoyable experience for all who visit.
